This catalog has been published with the support of the Alliance française de Madrid. Comprising two booklets in a boxed set, the edition follows the game of duality. works, a collection of plastic artworks Exit, and a literary work Baptiste Laurent y el otro.
Baptiste Laurent and the Other. . is a novel by Argentinian writer Ernesto Bottini, approached from the angle of the “false catalog” or “essay-fiction”. Based on the painter’s work and a series of exhibitions, the text deals with the experience of contemporary migration and the construction of a gaze that problematizes ideas of identity and otherness. Literary language blends with pictorial language through duplication and paraphrase to propose an autonomous and at the same time kaleidoscopic narrative work on immigration and the ethical, political and aesthetic challenges it poses to “host” societies and the repercussions it has on the lives of individuals.
“The truth of the other is not in his face, it is in the mask he constructs from his face. The face is what we see. The mask is what the other wants to make of his face. When we remove a person’s mask, we discover not his truth, but our truth.”
Ernesto Bottini
